Pregnant and difficulty falling asleep

Resolved question:
Hi, my wife is 21 weeks pregnant and is having difficulty sleeping. She woke up because she was too cold. We heated up the room, but now she says she can't sleep because her heart rate is up. She also found out today that she might be diabetic. What could be the problem and what should I do?

Hello,

Thank you for asking your query at DoctorSpring.

The two symptoms - feeling too cold (heat or cold intolerance) and increasing heart rate are common occurrences in pregnancy. During pregnancy there is blood vessel dilatation and increased circulating blood volume + the fluctuating levels of hormones which can result in these symptoms.

Unless there is sever symptoms or any warning symptoms (mentioned below) just reassurance is enough. Make the room temperature comfortable. If she anxious about the Diabetic status you should reassure that most cases can be controlled with Diet modification and will not harm the baby. She can lie in a 45% recumbent position with a pillow support.

The warning sings you should look for - Loss of consciousness, abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, sudden onset of breathlessness, any unusual distressing symptoms.
Hope this helps
