Depression after starting INSULIN to control raised blood sugar.

Resolved Question:

Hi. I've been going through a lot in the past year trying to get my blood sugar under control. I finally got it under control with a combo of metformin, glyburide and insulin. When I started the insulin, I began to get depressed. I am not prone to depression, well I was when I was younger but not for many years now. I also started having periods again and I've been in complete menopause for two years now. The higher my dose ( lantus solo star ) the more depressed and lethargic I became. Now, I can barely get out of bed. I am exhausted all of the time.
On top of this I have severe fibromyalgia, arthritis, and possible MS.
I was doing much better when my blood sugar was high before the insulin. I told my doctor about this and they mentioned switching my Insulin but my insurance won't cover it. I ca t keep going on like this. I am at the point of stopping the insulin and just eating greens n turkey in small amounts the rest of my life. Is that an option ? How do I safely get off the insulin ? I also thought it might be depleting my iron so I tried a high iron diet with a vitamin c supplement for absorption but it had no effect. I am out of ideas. This is the kind of exhaustion you would feel after climbing a mountain in the rain all week. But it's every day. 24/7 . I was absolutely fine before the insulin.

Hello,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
Insulin usually does not have such effects. It may be the effects of your body having got used to higher glucose levels and now your sugars have normalised which is like relatively low for the body. Let the body get used to normal sugar levels. Also check your Hemoglobin, Thyroid and take adequate Calcium, Vitamin D. I am sure you will feel better with the same medications.
Feel free to discuss further,
Regards.

Patient replied :

Well, it stArted effecting me before the insulin was anywhere near controlling the blood sugar so I was like this when my blood sugar was still high. I had to increase incrementally 2 units every other day. I had to go up to 80 units before I was under control and this all stRted within days of me first taking it and there was still no effect on the blood sugar because of the low dose. I will try what you said, but how long should I wAit ? I've been und er control for two months now. I can't excercise for more than 10 minutes and that is torture. I just want to sleep. I need my life back. If this keeps up, what do you recommend ?

Hello,
Kindly get the tests done as I mentioned and based on that I can guide you.
I am sure you will feel better soon.
Once the tests are done, upload the results and I will get back to you.
Regards.
