Bell's palsy is usually caused by viral infection due to herpes virus infection. There is inflammation of the facial nerve, leading to weakness of one half of the face and pain.

The usual treatment consists of acyclovir (antiviral drug), prednisolone (a steroid to reduce the inflammation) and physiotherapy (including facial exercises and galvanic current stimulation) to improve the strength of facial muscles.

Acyclovir is an antiviral drug, and the usual adult dose is 800 mg five times daily for five days.
Prednisolone is a steroid, and in Bell's palsy, I usually use Tab prednisolone 40 mg once daily for five days.
