Can wind/gas trapped in stomach feel as lump?

Resolved Question:

Hi, is it possible to feel trapped wind/ gas as a lump in the tummy? For the past month of so, i have notice that when I have a rumbly gassy tummy (particularly first thins in the morning before I eat) , i get a lump appear an inch or two about my navel slightly to the left. It only appears for a few seconds, then it goes down. I went to my gp, who felt my tummy and said he couldn't detect any trace of any lumps or inflammation. I am naturally very slender and have very little weight on me and even i must admit once the lump disappears I can not feel anything there. However when it appears it is definitely there (I have had other family member feel it and it is even slightly visable) My dr put this down to anxiety and prescribed me fluoxetine and told me to return in 3 weeks for a check up. So my ultimate question is, is this likely to be gas bubbles? or should I be concerened that it may be something else. I am experiencing no pain in my stomach, no vomiting, no other notable symptoms other than this lump than comes, stays for a few seconds and then goes again.

Hello,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
So you have an on and off history of smoking ( around 10 per day for the last 13-14 years ). The good thing is you have decided to stop smoking, and hence you have taken the first adeqaute step towards prevention of lung cancer.
You seem to have acute pharyngitis, which could be due to smoking, as smokers do tend to develop chronic pharyngitis. A lot of constant coughing can also lead to minor bleeding from the irritated pharyngeal mucosa.
With this history, you should not worry about lung cancer. Lung cancer develops in patients smoking close to 2-3 packets per day over a period of 20 years or so. So your exposure is not adequate to cause lung cancer as of now, and if you quit it then the effects will be reversed.
However it is better you get yourself evaluated by an ENT specialist who can examine your throat and guide you accordingly. A course of antibiotics and a cough syrup like Ascoril will be sufficient for the infection.
Feel free to discuss further,
Regards.

What is chronic pharangitis? I can understand what you're saying, however currently I do not have a cough, that cleared up weeks ago. So I am not sure where the blood is from

Hello,
The blood could be coming from the irritated pharyngeal mucosa.
In chronic pharyngitis, the passage connecting your oral and the nasal cavity, is inflamed due to either infection, or smoking, and the inflammation takes over 6 weeks to recover.
In smokers over a period of time, this pharnyx could be very easily inflamed and lead to such minor bleeding.
Don't try to forcefully bring any mucus out, since it may lead on to further bleeding.
Since yoi have no cough now, just avoid smoking and also get an ENT specialist to check your throat.
Feel free to discuss further,
Regards.

Patient replied :

Ok, so you think with no cough and my age I shouldn't worry about lung cancer?

Hello,
Yes please do not worry about lung cancer.
Just get yourself evaluated and get the treatment for pharyngitis after confirmation.
Regards.
