Burn injury on the thumb.

Resolved Question:

I accidently spilled scorching hot facial wax on my thumb last night. My initial reaction was to throw my hand under cool water and start peeling off the wax. It ended up pealing off several layers of skin (ouch!) and once it was off I put my hand in cool water again for about 5 minutes.

I then went to the local pharmacist who told me to put burn cream on it and cover it with sterile, non stick, pads. When I woke up this morning I took off the old bandage, applied triple antibiotic cream, and bandaged it up.

I have bandaged it up twice today after applying more cream. I am also keeping it dry.

Am I doing this right or should I see a doctor?

I do have good pictures but it won't let me upload them.

Thank you for choosing DoctorSpring.

Yes, your approach is correct. Just make sure that you are not putting too much pressure over the wound with non stick pads. Tie them gently allowing bit of a room. Once a day antibiotic ointment is enough.

If it is okay you can forward me a picture of the burns lesion the next time you remove the pad. (You can reply as a followup)

If there is throbbing pain which is persistant for more than 24 hours, swelling , discharge , further peeling off of tissue you should consider visiting a Doctor directly

Hope this helps
