Is this a Stye?

Resolved Question:

The day before yesterday, I found a pea-sized lump beneath my eyelid,1-2 mm down. Actually it doesn't look like a stye but my eye is seen swollen when looked from outside. It is slightly paining and itchy. I used some Golden Eye ointment from yesterday (TDibrompropamidineIsetionate 0.15% w/w) twice a day, as directed by the pharmacist. I cleaned the entire area with baby shampoo today. I am 55 years old and when I was young, I used to get some styes. The day before I got this, I used an unclean eyeliner brush. Can this be the reason for this infection? Should I wait for some time or consult my GP as soon as possible?

Hello. Thank you for posting your query.

The symptoms you described and the past history of styes guide me more towards stye rather than any other condition. Stye is an infection of sebaceous gland at the base of the eyelashes. It points towards the outer aspect of the lid where as a chalazion,( a condition where meibomian glands get blocked and get inflamed) points inside the lid. The repeated attack of stye is sign of unhygienic practices and/ or reduced immunity as in diabetes. Stye is triggered by reduced sleep and poor nutrition. Also sharing of cosmetics like eyeliner brush, as in your case has an increased chance of acquiring stye.

I would recommend the following:

1)Regular washing of hands with soap.

2)Warm compresses to eyelids every morning for 5-10 minutes for 5-6 times a day

3)Dont share cosmetics

4)Dont prick the eyelashes or tip of the swelling

5)Consult an ophthalmologist if symptoms persist beyond 7 days. Erythromycin is quite effective, but again should be prescribed under supervision.

Hope this helps .
