Mother with cold sore and handling infants

Resolved Question:

Hi. I'm the mother to a beautiful baby girl who will be 4 months in three days from now. A few days ago we both had colds (coughing, sneezing, congestion). She also had a low fever on Sunday (99.5). This evening (Monday) upon brushing my teeth, I noticed what appeArs to be the start of a large cold soar under my nostril. She's exclusively breastfed and I'm still on maternity leave so we are closely together all day. I know I kissed her tons of times on Monday but I don't know if I contacted her skin with that part of me. ( the sore is emerging right under my nose instead of on my lip) or if the sore was "leaking" or weeping At the time. Terrified at what I read online about the risks of HSv1 for little infants (including deaths of younger infants exposed to HSv1 and 2), I called her pediatrician at 10 pm at night upon discovering the stArt of the cold sore but he didn't seem concerned but also didn't give me a lot of info. How serious is this? Assuming I inadvertently exposed my baby to the sore today exposed her to my emerging sore, is of likely that she will get very sick? Should she be on antiviral medicines? Is there Anything else I should know. Again she has been breastfed since birth and I did have one cold sore during pregnancy (not sure if that helps her with immunity protection). Thanks

Dear parent,

Thank you for your consult at DoctorSpring.com. I understand your concerns.

It is appreciable that you have very good awareness regarding HSV and its symptoms. But, practically sores can be due to a thousand reasons and would be preposterous of me to give my opinion without seeking more details regarding the sore. It would be of great help if you can provide me a photograph of the 'cold sore' that you have been referring to.

Awaiting your follow-up.
