Hello,

Thank you for your consult at DoctorSpring.com. Yes, it is important that you get in touch with your GP/ER for evaluation on this. Pain in the lower back with burning sensation while urination can happen due to infection in the urinary tract. Non-infectious causes usually do not start suddenly.

Urinary tract infection can comprise of infection anywhere in the urinary tract like in the kidneys, bladder and urethra. Prostatitis can also cause this kind of pain. Prostatitis presents with increased urgency and frequency to pass urine along with the above mentioned symptoms.

Low back pain with burning micturition and feeling of swelling in the back(fluid pocket) could be due to infection in the kidney.

Stones in the kidney or urinary tract can also cause this pain, but burning micturition and sudden pain points mainly towards infectious origin.

Here are my recommendations:
1. Drink plenty of water and do not take any pain relievers as that would mask the actual cause for pain.

2. Your doctor would conduct a clinical examination and depending upon the results certain investigations can be done.

3. You need to get a urine analysis, urine culture, ultrasound examination of the abdomen and x - ray KUB. Depending upon the results further treatment suggestion can be made.

4. Uncomplicated infections are usually treated with a course of augmentin or doxycycline for 5 days. In case of complicated infections IV antibiotics can be prescribed for 2 weeks.

5. In case of sexually transmitted infections being the cause for urinary tract infection, treatment is specific for that particular infection.

Hope this helps. Do write to me for follow ups.
Thank you.

Patient replied :

What kind of STIs do I need to be tested for, I did have unprotected sex just before this pain started.. Thankyou. I will c my gp tomorrow .

Thank you for writing back. All most every STD can cause urinary tract infections, especially if lesions of the infection are present near the opening of the urethra.

STD's that can cause urinary tract infections include gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, syphilis, herpes, HPV, HIV etc

If you had unprotected sex, and have any rash or blisters or ulcers in the genital region, you need to get tested for STD's for further conclusion on this.
