What is the treatment for MYCOPLASMA GENATALIUM?

Resolved Question:

Hello I am a 32 yr. old Male.....I (very regretfully) had unprotected sex with a female about 10 days ago. Almost a week after the encounter I started feeling a slight pain in my penis and later developed into a burning sensation when peeing and discharge. I visited my local STD clinic and had all the necessary STD checks done, all of which came back negative except for Mycoplasma Genatalium (came back as detected). As a precaution, my Dr. gave me an injection (don't know what it was called) along with 4 pills of 250 mg of azithromycin that I took all at once (1mg) the same instant. I was contacted earlier today by my doctor and was directed to take Ofloxacin 200mg (Tarivid) twice a day for 5 days as well. My questions are as follow, 1) Is the treatment I was prescribed sufficient enough to cure and take care of this problem? 2) How soon will this treatment clear my problem? 3) Although I know sex is out of the question at this point, but for how long should I wait to be 100% sure it’s out of my system. 4) I will get retested to make sure, but how long is a sufficient enough time to wait before being re-tested? And now my biggest dilemma, I was on the road to divorce with my wife and had been for months, but fortunately, yet awkwardly we agreed to give this relationship another chance the same week I had this unfortunate encounter. Now, we had not had sex yet, but I would suspect it is bound to happen very soon. That being said, there is no way I will be having sex with my wife while having this, but I just need to know how to make sure it doesn't get passed on to her, so I need to know when it is safe to do so. I also have a 3 yr. old daughter; I need to know how contagious this infection is. Should I be worried about kissing my daughter or my wife? Should I be worried about sharing a spoon or a glass of water? Should I be worried about my stained underwear when in the wash, or can I assume once its washed thats it? I know these may be trivial question, but I am a mess and I need to know. Finally, Will this have an impact on my fertility, or on any future pregnancies we plan. Should I be worried about this bacteria appearing in any blood work in future or in future babies. I apologize for my lengthy message; your response is greatly appreciated.

Hello.

Thank you? for using DoctorSpring.com for your query.

I understand your concern. Let me answer each of your questions individually.

1) Is the treatment I was prescribed sufficient enough to cure and take care of this problem?

Yes. Azithromycin is the first line and most effective treatment for Mycoplasma genitalium infection. Additional Ofloxacin has also been prescribed for you. So this will be sufficient for a complete cure.

2) How soon will this treatment clear my problem?

At the end of this 5 day course of Ofloxacin, you will be completely free of this infection.

3) Although I know sex is out of the question at this point, but for how long should I wait to be 100% sure it’s out of my system.

Till you complete this antibiotic course, that is till the end of 5 days.

4) I will get retested to make sure, but how long is a sufficient enough time to wait before being re-tested?

You can test on the next day of finishing the Ofloxacin course. A negative test will reassure you that you are cured completely.

5) I need to know how contagious this infection is.

This infection is transmitted through sexual contact. So you don't have to worry about any other activity apart from this. You will not transmit it by sharing utensils or kissing. Undergarments once washed are safe as detergents and washing kills the bacteria if any. More importantly, the therapy with Azithromycin would have made you non contagious already.

No, it will not have any impact on your fertility or any future pregnancy. And no, it will not appear on any of your blood work in the future or in your babies.

Please relax.

I hope that was helpful.

Feel free to ask queries.

Thank you.

Thank You Dr. Sebastian for the comforting words. I just have one more inqury if you don't mind. Sunday June 15th: I was given an injection AND 1mg of Azithromicin Tuesday June 17th: I started my 5 day course of Ofloxacin 200 mg twice a day. That being said, it has been 4 days since i had the injection as well as the azithromicin; and 2 days of Ofloxacin, but i am still feeling the burning sensation while urinating and i still have the discharge. What does this mean with respect to my treatment? and when should i expect to see these symptoms disappearing? Thanks Once again.

Hello.

I am glad that my opinion made you feel better and I will be happy to answer your query.

You have been initially given an injection, which is mostly Ceftriaxone, a cephalosporin antibiotic along with 1 gram of Azithromycin.

Since it has only been 2 days of Ofloxacin, you can wait till 5 days for complete disappearance of your symptoms.

If your symptoms persist beyond that, it might be due to persistence of infection. In such a case, additional testing and antibiotic therapy may be required.

I hope that answers your query.

Let me know if I can assist you any further.

Thank you.

Dear Dr.
Aprox. 3 days in to my 5 day course of Oflaxcin, I started getting discomfort in my eyes, at first i thought it was allergies, but it persisted onwords to rich redness in my eyes/swelling and pressure. Now, 2 days after my last dose my eyes are still the same. Could this be a side effect to the antibiotic or is it the bacteria making its way to my eyes. I read the leaflet for the antibiotics and it didn't mention anything about it affecting the eyes?
If it is the bacterial making its way to the eyes, what does that mean? Is this contagious?
I am really confused...
As for my other symptoms, by the 5th day, my symptoms were much better, although i do feel some slight pain in the penis till now, but i suspect things are OK. For how long after the last dose does the antibiotic stay in my systemt? Finally I will be going to get retested again on Thursday, hopeing that everything will be fine.
Thank you for all your help once again.

The good thing is regarding your STD that your doctor was spot on and gave you the treatment required at that point. With a course of azithro and ofloxacin, by now the infection would have cleared up. Your eye symptoms must be some other infection and definitely not because the bacteria is travelling to your eyes. So please don't worry about that. When you finish the course of antibiotics, and get yourself tested it would definitely be negative.

For your eyes if there is a lot of discharge then it is due to an infection and you can ciplox eye drops 2-3 times daily 2 drops in each eye, depending on your symptoms. If there's no discharge then it can be due to allergy or irritation, for which i would advise refresh tear drops, 2 drops in each eye, 2- 3 times daily, till your symtoms persist. If it doesn't get better in 2 days, get an ophthal opinion.

However i would like to reinforce the eye symptoms are not due to Ofloxacin and definitely not because the bacteria is traveling up to your eyes. Infection with Mycoplasma is localised to urrthra and penis, can cause urthritis, with burning urination. But you have been already treated for that. Once the reports come on thursday i think you will be able to relax. So just wait till then and take care of your eyes.

Hope that answers your query.

Regards

Good Day Dr.
I wanted to update you with my test results, i re took the urine test 5 days after i took my last pill of my treatment. Everything came back negative, excpet for the pus count came out to be 18 when the norm is below 10. Can you eleborate on what this means. My dr. asked me to come in and do another urine test. I am worried once again. Does this mean i still have a STD, am i still contageous, can i have intercourse again ? I am also feeling like i have been sick in the past few days, my eyes first, and now conjested sinuses. My eyes are much better now though. I am really confused here. I have uploaded my results as well for you to look at.
Please help.

Best Regards

Thanks for uploading your new reports.
No since all the STDs came out to be negative, there is no further cause to worry. Mostly high pus cells in urine means mycoplasma or chlamydia infection. Since you had mycoplasma, the tract got infected and hence the pus cells being excreted. It takes some time for the tract to heal. You have already had enough courses of antibiotics. Even that can make you feel slightly fatigued. So there is no further need to take any more antibiotics. To ensure a quicker healing of the tract, i would advise you to drink plenty of water ( 3-4 liters a day ), consume a lot of fruit juices, preferably Cranberry ( helps in making the tract acidic, in case there is some bacteria, it won't survive), and repeat your urine test after a week. You can have sexual intercourse, but it is better to use protection.
Regarding your sinuses, use steam inhalation. It will help in decongesting your sinuses.
Once your urine reports come next time, please upload them. Don't worry it will be fine next time.
Regards
