Blood in stool followed by diarrhea

Resolved Question:

I had blood in my stool for a week. More than typical scraping blood caused by hard stool. Significant amounts probably an oz or more every time I used the toilet, typically between 2-4 times in a day. My bowel movements were soft and I had no cramping or excessive gas. Now, I have diarrhea that has been occurring for about 6 days. I go to the bathroom between 3-5 times an hour if I eat at normal intervals. In order to keep myself from using the bathroom I have limited the amount of food I eat. This helps, but each time I use the toilet it is nothing but straight diarrhea. Each interval lasts a short period of time because it is so loose. I haven't had excessive gas but occasionally I get cramping. I'm not sure why it would start with bloody stool and lead to this. There is no more blood, however, which I assumed is a good sign.

Male, 21 years old.

Thank you, KB

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.RK and I am pleased to assist you.
I went through your post about blood in stools followed by loose stools.
One of the possibilities is inflammatory bowel disease like ulcerative colitis.
I would advice you to undergo a few tests.
A complete blood count, a stool analysis and a colonoscopy may be done.
These tests would throw some light on the possible causes of your symptoms and confirm ulcerative colitis if that is causing the symptoms.
You need to consult a gastroenterolgist for these tests.
Let me know if I can assist you further
Regards,
Dr.R.K

Could something as simple as stress be the cause of this? I have never had this problem before, at least not to this extent of time.

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me with more questions.
No stress does not cause blood in stool and diarrhea.
As suggested earlier, complete blood count, stool analysis and colonoscopy must be done to find the cause.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr.R.K
