Constant diarrhea

Resolved Question:

In South Thailand. Had constant diarrhea for 4 days. That subsided, now nausea and upset stomach, almost like a feel of indigestion. Got anti nausea pills from nurse on base (not really helping) and charcoal, which did help me sleep. Woke up, pain and nausea back again.

(I typically have problems with constipation so diarrhea is very abnormal)

Hello, Thankyou for approaching DoctorSpring with your query. Could you clarify whether you have been travelling or whether you have been in South Thailand for a period of time.

I would like you to answer a few more questions so that I can understand your case better and give you an informed opinion.

1) Did you have any blood in the stools?
2) Did you have fever?
3) Do you have any yellowish discoloration in your eyes or palms?
4) Do you feel that the nausea worsens only when you see food? i.e Do you feel an aversion to food?
5) Did you take any antibiotics or did the diarrhea stop by itself? Can you please can you specify which medications you have taken.

Please reply as a follow up and I shall guide you accordingly.

Thankyou

Patient replied :

I've been in Thailand since December 30th (boyfriend post here for work)

- no blood
- no fever
- no yellow discoloration in eyes or palm
- Yes, I do have an aversion to food, seems to make nausea worse

- no I did not take any anti biotics. Diarrhea stopped on its own. I was prescribed anti nausea pills and ultra carbon. I then had about a couple of days of no symptoms, than proceeded to nausea and now upset stomach. I'm gassy and burping.

- Also, I'm not pregnant (Took test) Cycle came as per normal

- took one of my boyfriend's nexium (about an hour ago 4pm February 1st) incase it was indigestion. Not sure if it's really helping as of yet. I've used nexium myself in the past. felt safe taking it.

Thankyou for following up with your replies. Since you seem to have no other symptoms besides nausea and aversion for food. I would suggest you stop the anti emetic and ultra carbon. You can either continue the Nexium once a day half an hour before a meal for 14 days OR take an Over the counter (OTC) drug Prilosec once a day, half an hour before a meal for 14 days. In addition you can take a probiotic capsule thrice a day for 3 days. However if you feel no improvement in your symptoms after 3 doses of Nexium /Prilosec, or if you feel the abdominal pain has worsened, if you have fever, weakness complete loss of appetite or if you feel your urine is dark yellow (darker than usual) I suggest you go to the medical center and get yourself tested for Hepatitis A. (Hepatitis A Rapid Test Kits are available)Wishing you a speedy recovery. Feel free to follow up with any further queries. Thankyou.

Thank you very much for your response. I have had both my Hep A/B vaccines, so I hope that's not it. I will continue on nexium like you said, and go from there.
