Diarrhea, vomiting, fever after visiting caribbean. Treatment?

Resolved Question:

My question is: I just got back from vacation in the Caribbean, I was fine, until the night we flew back I became very sick on my stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, fever 101. I am 43 years old female with high blood pressure. This diarrhea went on from Sunday into Monday night. I have been drinking fluids and Gatorade, eating crackers, chicken soup. My fever is gone now, I am not vomiting anymore or any diarrhea, just weak, sleeping a lot. I was able to eat some toast, and rice, and soup. I have not been to work in the last three days. My work is saying I should not come back tomorrow. Monday it should be all cleared up. Is this for anymore concern or should I go into the doctor? I am feeling better just weak and tired but on the mend. I did receive the flu shot this year. Your thoughts on doing anything further? Thank you, Theresa from Northern Va.

Thank you for your query at
I understand your concern.
You did pick up a stomach bug and you still have not recovered completely. You have done the diet part right and maintained your fluid intake, so the symptoms have gotten better. You can rest for a couple of more days and by then you should feel a lot better. If not, you need a course of antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin 500 mg twice daily for 3 days which will clear any residual infection. You can also take probiotics for 2 weeks.
Feel free to discuss further,

Thank you very much for your reply. Do you think I am contagious at this point and should I clorox and bleach things in my house? My husband never got ill. My office thinks I should not come back into the office until Monday. Your thoughts? I was just going to try to go into the office tomorrow and get my laptop but they are telling me to stay home. Your further thoughts? I appreciate your response. Thank you again.

Yes, even I feel you need to rest for another 2-3 days.
There is no need to bleach your house though.
If the symptoms still persist a course of Ciplox along with probiotics can be taken.
