Frequent urination, dryness, more hunger, swelling in foot. Cause?

Dear Doc,

My wife was having frequent urination,dryness on skin ,more hunger and swelling on foot for past 2-3days. we checked her random sugar level in blood and it was 329mg/dl and her avg 3 months sugar level was 8.3%. We were told by an internal medicine doctor that my wife is having very high sugar and is a diabetic patient now. he also gave us medicine. My question is
1) can she control her diet and do exercise and reduce the sugar level so that we can avoid taking medicine.
2) or can we take medicine and once the sugar is in control...can we slowly reduce the frequency of medicine
3) we both were planning to have a baby. is it ok to conceive now??.or we bring the sugar level under control and then think of a baby. Can my wife get pregnant and give birth to a healthy baby and that she can also remain healthy after delivery.

Yes, she does have Diabetes. She needs medicine like Metformin along with diet and exercise for sugar control. It is advisable to control sugars well and have hba1c below 7%, fasting below 90 and after meal sugars below 130mg/dl before planning pregnancy. Yes she can have a successful pregnancy and lead a healthy life if managed properly. She can exercise adequately and with medicines like Metformin she will be fine.

Thank you doctor . Does she have to take medicine throughout her life??. Will there be any complications during pregnency and is there any chance of brith deffects to the baby .

Yes, Diabetes is a chronic disease.
So, she has to take the medicines life-long, but the dose can be titrated if her values are fine.
Also, if she can control the values and hba1c is below 7, there will be no complications to the child.
