Stomach cramps, pain after dinner. What is this?

Resolved Question:

So last night.... hmmm... I started having this intense pain in my left side, kind of like a big gas bubble or something, so I thought it was stomach cramps and that my maybe my body did not care for the Mexican dinner I'd had, but I eventually had to move to the bathroom and as I lay curled up on the bathroom floor, the pain getting worse and worse, I realized that it was actually more similar to lady part cramps only like 1000000x worse than any I'd ever had. And I'm not on my period right now. The pain was so bad I couldn't even look at stuff on my phone to distract myself and I thought I was going to throw up. After the better part of an hour I finally crawl to the bedroom and get my husband to bring me the heating pad and some tea. I down like half a bottle of midol and stay hunched on the bed with the heating pad for a half hour before the pain starts to dissipate. I was convinced I should be bleeding or dying or something. I even had the hubby google 'burst appendix' and 'kidney stones' just because I had NO IDEA what the eff was happening to my body. Around 12:30 the pain dulled to regular old period cramp style and I was finally able to old lady walk to the kitchen to get some water and get to sleep soon after. What the heck was going on?? This morning I feel FINE. Totally normal.

Hello,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern.
So you had left sided abdominal pain and it felt like contractions, only the pain was severe.
Since you already feel fine, you possibly had very bad indigestion, a lot of gas build up in the stomach. Sometimes bouts of indigestion can cause extreme pain but once the gas clears up it automatically resolves.
When was your LMP? How long does your cycles last? Any menstrual problems before?
It does not seem to be related to period, since pre period pain is never that severe. The only relevant history that i get is the Mexican Dinner, which probably caused all the discomfort. Did you have any episodes of diarrhea last night? How was your stool this morning?
If it was an isolated episode then there is no further cause of worry.
However if it repeats, an Ultrasound Whole Abdomen will be prudent.
Feel free to discuss further,
Regards.

Patient replied :

Nope, no diarrhea and after the initial left sided pain first bit of stomach cramps, it really felt like menstrual cramps. Totally normal stool this morning.
My last period ended early last week. And no, I have pretty normal periods. I've been on birth control for over a decade, and when I do get cramps they're pretty minor. Nothing some midol won't fix.
I of course went googling when the pain started to subside and I was able to lie in bed with just the heating pad, and freaked myself out reading about burst apendixes and ovarian cysts and kidney stones and the like. But since I feel fine today and have still seen no blood, I'm guessing I can just say it was a weird fluke and not worry? :-/

Hello,
Yes since the symptoms resolved overnight there is definitely no scare of burst appendix or kidney stones.
So if it does not occur again there is really no reason to worry.
The cramps related to indigestion can feel like that.
In case the symptoms do appear again, an ultrasound will be helpful.
As of now there is nothing to worry about.
Regards.
