Will one step pill work after OVULATION?

Resolved Question:

My girlfriend and I had unprotected sex right at the end of her period. I ejaculated inside her. She believes that she had already started ovulation. About two hours later she took a plan b one step pill. We are very concerned about her being pregnant. I am 36 and she is 40. We read that if she is already in ovulation that the pill will not work. I was wondering if this is true and how effective plan b is during ovulation? Any other information about it would also be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
What is her normal cycle length ?
Ovulation occurs around midcycle generally.
Right at the end of the period, she is least likely to be ovulating.
YEs, Plan B is not effective if she had already ovulated, but I find that less likely around the time you mention.
All the best.
Please feel free to discuss further.

Patient replied :

Her period started on the 17th of June. We had sex on the 22 June. She said she does not have a 28 day cycle. Sometimes it is 22 sometimes it is 25. So would that mean she is ovulating? Thank you.

Thanks for writing to us again.
Even with a 22 day cycle, assuming the shortest possible, it is very less likely for her to ovulate around day 5 of her period, when you had unprotected sex.
I would not have you worried unnecessarily, it is not at all likely that she would conceive.
Take care.

Patient replied :

One last thing. She is having some brown discharge and some blood. She is convinced that the blood is implantation bleeding because it is 6 days after sex. I think it may be from plan b. Is there any pregnancy test either otc or through her doctor that would be accurate now or soon? She is obsessing over this. Thank you.

Hello.
Thanks for writing to us again.
I am almost 100 % sure it is withdrawal bleeding from the Plan B.
The Plan B might also prepone or postpone her next period, thus further aggravating her anxiety.
I would not advise any test so soon, it would be inconclusive, only requiring repetition at a later date.
Wait until the next expected date of her period, in case it is skipped, take a home test.
Take care.
