Bleeding after restarting contraceptive pills

Resolved Question:

Hello,
I broke up from a 7 year relationship in November, and following advise from my friends, gave my body a break from my contraceptive pill (Levlin ED) which I started taking when I was 16. I'm now 24. When I was put on it, my doctor suspected I might have low oestrogen levels which were causing migraines, but the pill seemed to fix it so no tests were really done.
I started taking the pill again last week, and had intercourse last night, and there was some bleeding. I am pretty sure it's not an STI, as I have always had protected sex, and only two sexual partners. This has never happened before.
I am thinking it might be a hormone thing? Or, I have been eating and sleeping really poorly due to stress recently, could that be it?
My question is, how do I stop this happening again? Or is it something I should be concerned about.

Hello,
Thank you for asking the query.

This particular bleeding is nothing to be worried about. Since you just restarted OCP after a break, this could be a form of withdrawal bleeding. The regularly hormones offering the endometrial support might not have reached its target levels, and hence the bleeding.

STIs will not present like this, as you rightly said.

And yes, stress and inadequate nutrition could be a risk factor.  Have nutritious diet and you can consider taking Multivitamin and Iron tablets for a couple of months in consult with your Doctor.

You need not do anything actively to stop the bleeding now. It should clear by its own. You need to be concerned only if the bleeding keeps happening for more  a couple of times (not including this episode). In that case you may have to visit an OBGYN.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask follow-up questions.
Thank you
