Black toenails with toenail fungus. MELANOMA?

In have had toenail fungus on my right big two for over 10 years old patient- about a month ago the nail went almost totally black, I couldn't remember trauma.........I recently saw that black toenails could be melanoma....although I have no hutchinsons signs or any redness of blackness around the nail - just on the nail..........still am worried, I also do not have any horizontal lines and the proximal end of nail - the nail bed is free from the black color or any color it looks like normal nail growing out. I am seeing a dermatologist in a couple of weeks, but am very scared. I am 48 year old white male, with no family history of melanoma.......could this be melanoma or is it just the nail fungus changing characteristics....

I can understand your concern.

It seems to be nail fungus . It's caused by a fungus called dermatophyte. It causes this kind of nail change.

The treatment for your toe nail fungus or onychomycosis would be oral terbinafine for 3 to 6 months.

It doesn't look like a melanoma. However, it would be best to consult a doctor who can just examine the nail once, and make sure about that.
