Chances of getting HSV2 by sex during outbreak.

Resolved Question:

I'm a male and 3 weeks ago I had protected sex with a woman who told me she has genital HSV-2. She doesn't get outbreaks but has confirmed the infection using a blood test and has transmitted the virus to one other guy.

Since that encounter, I didn't see anything too unusual but starting two days ago (exactly 3 weeks after) I felt very fatigued. I didn't have a fever, but was out of it until late yesterday. Also starting two days ago and continuing into today is a new sensation, which is sort of like having icy hot on my skin in a few areas. Most noticeably the buttocks, back and front of thighs, and pelvic area all have a strange sensitivity that makes them feel a bit cold at some times and itchy / slightly burning at others.

I have yet to see an actual lesion or visible rash, just the icy hot sensation described above plus itchy scrotum (more frequently than normal) and sometimes itching on my butt.

Could these symptoms be indicative of HSV-2? Also, how soon can I get tested for a reasonably accurate (>90%) antibody test? I realize you can't be sure until 3-6 months out, but if I could get even some helpful info before then I'd like to.

Hello,
Thank you for posting your medical query to DoctorSpring.com

Mycoplasma and chlamydia are very difficult to culture and hence may not be picked up on investigations. You should start yourself on tablet Doxycycline 100 mg twice daily under the care of your doctor for 2 weeks. Your symptoms shall improve.
Hope this helps, feel free to discuss further

Patient replied :

I was advised not to take anymore antibiotics by my doctor since i took levoflaxacin for so long (5 weeks), and took azithromycin 3 weeks before (for 3 days). Do you still advise taking antibiotics?

Expert:  Dr. Rajiv Goel replied 3 Days.

Dear sir,

Doxycycline is highly specific for mycoplasma and Chlamydia and you should take it.
Sincerely
Rajiv Goel

Patient replied :

Dear Dr.
I'm on Doxycycline hyclate 100mg twice daily for 9 days now. I'm experiening some improvement regarding my symptoms. However, since the sixth day, I've been experiencing high diziness, lack of energy, lack of focus, and loss of appetite. What should I do?

Expert:  Dr. Rajiv Goel replied 2 Days.

Hello,
Thank you for the follow up.
It is a good sign that your symptoms are resolving. The symptoms that you're experincing right now could be due to Doxycycline itself. Are you taking the medicine after food? If you take it empty stomach you will feel such symptoms with more of gastric irritation.
Regards.

Patient replied :

Yes I always take it after food. My question is what should I do now? Keep taking it? Stop? Decrease the dosage?

Expert:  Dr. Rajiv Goel replied 1 Day.

Hello,
If the symptoms are to difficult to manage then you can stop it after 10th day.
Ideally you should continue the medicine for 2 weeks, and it will resolve.
So if you are in a lot of discomfort then you can stop after 1 more day. Or else continue it for another 4 days and finish the course.
You can't reduce the dosage of doxycycline. The lowest recommended dose for an adult is 100 mg.
Regards.
