Had sex with GONORRHEA positive girl. Is ZITHROMAX enough?

Resolved Question:

Hello, I had unprotected sex on Friday, August 22nd. The partner notified me that she has gonorrhea and gave me 1g of Zithromax. Can I take this now? If I was infected, is it too early to fight?

Hello.
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern.
The good thing is it is not too late. Most men who get infected with gonorrhoea don't show any symptoms. Hence it is better to start the treatment. I will advise you modify the regimen slightly. For Gonorrhoea we advocate the use of Tab. Leva quin 500 mg as a single dose. Zithromax is more preventive towards chlamydia which sometimes occurs along with gonorrhoea. So as a preventive measure taking treatment for both will be prudent.
For Zithromax, you can take 500 mg on the first day, followed by 250 mg on 3 subsequent days.
That will take care of both gonorrhoea and chlamydia. And you will have no reason to worry about.
Hope this was helpful,
Regards.

Patient replied :

Ok, thank you. I will do this. My main question was, is it too early to take? I believe I might be in an incubation period, will it still kill the bacteria even though it is in this early stage? 4 Days since the sexual activity.
Also, is the Levaquin® 500 an over the counter drug that I could get at cvs?
2. Does it require a prescription?

Hello.
Absolutely. It is the best option to attack the bacteria when it is still finding ways to take over your body and reduce your immune system response. The earlier you start the better from prognosis point of view.
And yes you need prescription for it.
But i will strongly recommend you get it from your local doctor and take the single dose.
There are so many cases, where due to absence of symptoms patients never initiated the treatment and later presented with severe urethritis due to chronic infection. Hence the treatment is a must.
Regards.
