Hit on the nose and headcold

Resolved Question:

About three days ago while moving furniture, I hit myself pretty hard in the nose. I was momentarily stunned but did not become unconscious, nor was I dizzy after the first stun wore off (just a few seconds). My first thought was that I broke my nose because it hurt quite badly, but after feeling up and down the nose, I don't think it's broken--no blood, no swelling, no movement. So I just went about my business. Next day, I had a feeling of congestion in my ears, like a head cold. I vaguely wondered if it could be related to getting hit in the head, but on the other hand it's the season for head colds. Now the feeling of congestion has mostly but not completely gone away. On the one hand, it's good that it's reduced. On the other hand, it makes it seem like not a head cold. Could I have done some damage to myself? Is there anything that can be done about it if I did?

Hello,

Thank you for asking your query at DoctorSpring.

The feeling of congestion at the ear seems to be related to the previous episode of nose trauma although we cannot totally rule out a cold / seasonal flu.

The good news is that there is no reason for any concern as of now. The mechanism of congested feeling of the ear is same in both flue and trauma. There will be congestion and inflammation of Eustachian tube which maintains the air equilibrium inside the middle canal during trauma / cold causing slight dysfunction. Normally it will resolve by itself.

You can do a steam inhalation twice a day for faster relief of symptoms. Get medical help if the symptoms worsens and/or if there are new Ear or Nose symptoms.

Hope this helps
