There are many experimental methods currently being researched extensively.Who would choose getting a shot over taking a pill? The answer would be no one. Everybody hates getting a shot but what if they have to get at least one shot everyday for very long periods. This is the case with some diabetic patients; they have to get a shot of insulin almost every day to keep their blood glucose level under check. This is the only way they can ensure their safety. But ever since insulin was synthesized artificially drug companies have been trying to make insulin pills, because given the choice anybody would choose pills over injections any day. The reason the drug companies haven’t been able to produce insulin tablets is that insulin will be digested by the acids present in ones stomach before it can be absorbed into the blood stream. Insulin delivery systems are required by many diabetics mainly because they may die without it. Most diabetics who take insulin regularly hate the process mainly because it is painful and uncomfortable because they have to alternate arms and may even have to take them on their thighs and hips. Even though insulin tablets are required so badly there are reasons why they are still in the development stage, the main reason being there isn’t an effective shell that will protect the insulin present inside from the stomachs digestive juices, while still being able to be absorbed into the blood. Another Problem is designing the drug in such a way that its effects last for the desired period of time. There is also other problems for example what happens if a patient suffers from diarrhea and the pill just passes through too quickly for it to absorbed effectively into the system. There have been other systems of administering insulin to the patients like insulin pumps and inhalers. The pumps are still widely used but the inhalers have pulled off the shelves until further research.
