Dark circle/skin color change with MTHFR MUTATION.

Resolved Question:

3.5 weeks ago, my 18 month old daughter had general anesthesia that included Propofol. She had her bottom 2 front teeth and top 2 front teeth extracted, and the 2 teeth on either side of her top 2 front teeth were crowned. This was due to disintegrated enamel caused by severe acid reflux, a symptom of suspected Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

Her parents and 2 siblings have MTHFR mutation, and there is also mitochondrial dysfunction, autism, eosinophilic esophagitis, severe eczema, asthma, and multiple severe food and environmental allergies in her siblings. We do not yet know to what extent, if any, she is affected by these conditions. She has some gross motor and language delay, though not severe. Skin and blood testing reveals allergies to dairy, eggs, nuts, and soy. She has anaphylaxed after accidental dairy ingestion on. She has eczema and suspected eosinophilic esophagitis.

Today her physical therapist pointed out that, after the procedure (she saw the therapist three days following the procedure) she had suddenly developed dark circles under her eyes that had not been present before. They have worsened steadily over the last 3 weeks. She also noticed that her overall skin coloring looks different and not right.

What could be causing the dark circles/change in skin coloring and is it serious? Her brother gets dark circles and odd coloring/pallor/strage looking skin when having an allergy or eosinophilic esophagitis flare (among other symptoms when the patient does not have).

Dear parent,
Thank you for your consult at DoctorSpring.com.
It a a very complex medical situation that we are dealing with. You have elucidated multiple problems that are co-existing in your family. Mitochondrial dysfunction, autism, eosinophilic esophagitis cannot explain the skin symptoms.
The skin problem of recent onset that you have described could be due to eczema itself or something more serious. Does it appear to be mottled or cyanosed? Please send me photographs of the skin problems that you have noted. That ll help us understand the situation better.
Would be glad to answer any follow-ups as well.
Regards
